Featured Obituary:

Marguerite Arlene Wilcox Graepp, 94, a 65-year resident of Deerfield, Illinois passed away on June 7th, 2022. Arlene was the beloved wife of Eric Graepp, loving mother of three daughters, and caring grandmother to four grandchildren.

Arlene was born and grew up in the town of Concordia, Kansas. She was the oldest of three, born just before The Great Depression to an old pioneer family with many artistic talents. She was often the object of her mother Lucile’s photography and sewing projects. As a child, she played with doll furniture made by her father, John. While growing up in the Depression Era, she traveled in a neighbor’s homemade camper using gas rationing cards to enjoy vacations around the western states and trips to Liberty, Illinois to visit her grandparents’ farm. Arlene also enjoyed activities like swimming and riding horseback in old cavalry saddles at Girl Scout camp. Being raised in a creative family, Arlene developed her own love for the arts. She nurtured this passion by attending Colorado Women’s College to major in fashion design and later transferring to Kansas State University to finish her degree in Art Education. After college graduation, she taught high school art in Wichita, Kansas and Chicago, Illinois. While teaching in Chicago, she met her husband Eric during a post-WWII dance.

Arlene and Eric were married in 1957 and then moved to Deerfield to raise their three daughters. Throughout her 65-year residence in Deerfield, Arlene was an active participant of the community, Zion Lutheran Church, Girl Scouts, Infant Welfare Society of Chicago, and Illinois Republican Women. She used her artistic gifts to serve these groups by creating beautiful decorative art, logos, campaign graphics, pins, jewelry, and letterheads. She was frequently asked to design decorations for large political events where she met presidents and first ladies, as well as many local politicians.
