Fox Chapel Area School District’s Dorseyville Middle School eighth-grade language arts teacher Scott Vensel has been selected to attend the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous Summer Institute for Teachers.

The program is a high-level, intensive academic seminar in which participants examine the Holocaust from the precedents found in the history of antisemitism, to the rise of the Nazi party, to the aftermath of the Holocaust. Participants are part of lectures and small group work, and also meet with and hear from Holocaust survivors and noted scholars.

Those selected are known as Alfred Lerner Fellows and must be nominated by one of the centers in JFR’s Holocaust Centers of Excellence Program.

Vensel was nominated by the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh.

The program will be held June 24-29 at Columbia University in New York City.

Enrollment for the fall semester of the Fox Chapel Area High School’s preschool program is open.

Classes will be Monday through Thursday from 8:15-10:45 a.m. Sept. 6 through Dec. 15.

Cost is $90 per semester. Parents/guardians enrolling for both semesters upfront will pay $175.

A full program including language arts, math, science, and art will be presented to the children through lessons and activities taught by the high school students. The preschoolers will also have snack time, story circle time, and a large muscle activity each day as well as other activities that will prepare them for kindergarten.

Each child will receive a memory book as a final project from the high school students.
