For New Jersey drivers, the familiar EZPass transponders mounted on windshields may soon be going away.
According to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, stickers embedded with digital chips could replace the current EZPass devices.
The stickers have already been implemented in other states.
There is no official timeline for when the switch could take place.
The NJ Turnpike Authority says the stickers will save millions of dollars, and it’s all due to the composition of the proposed stickers.
The current transponders run on batteries, unlike the stickers. The batteries in the transponders must be replaced when they wear out, an issue that New Jersey could be moving on from if the digital stickers are approved.
