Tuesday service plans for NYC subways, NJ Transit, LIRR, Metro-North – NBC New York

It was the first blizzard the New York City area had seen in years, and will go down as one of the biggest snow storms in history — for some, the biggest ever.

Now that the snow has moved on and the cleanup is underway, many are returning to work or school. While a lot of mass transit was either limited or shut down entirely Monday, most are planning to be back up and running in time for the Tuesday morning commute, albeit possibly with altered schedules or anticipated delays.

So what services are the MTA, Metro-North, Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit running for Tuesday? Here’s a breakdown for each agency along with possible travel advisories:

NEW YORK

NYC buses and subway

New York City’s travel ban expired Monday, though a hazardous travel advisory remained in effect until overnight into Tuesday. The city advised drivers to exercise caution as roads are likely to remain slick and icy for some time, and to take public transportation whenever possible.

While subway and bus service wasn’t halted at any point during the storm, the MTA said some trains that run express may be running local. And whether taking the subway or bus, delays could be expected, some of which could be severe, depending on the route or line.

Alternate side parking will remain suspended until March 1.

Long Island Rail Road

LIRR services was suspended completely Monday, but will be back in service Tuesday, though with modified service. The agency was planning on running limited service on six lines starting at 4 a.m.:

  • Port Washington and Ronkonkoma branches: Hourly service
  • Babylon Branch: Reduced weekend service, with some morning westbound trains stopping at Valley Stream
  • Montauk Branch: Weekend service, with limited trains between Speonk and stations west of that
  • Oyster Bay Branch: Westbound service only for the morning rush, with service returning for both directions afterward
  • Port Jefferson Branch: Weekend service
  • Service to and from Brooklyn: Weekend service

The MTA said there would be no service on the Far Rockaway, Hempstead, Long Beach or West Hempstead branches. Nor would there be service between Ronkonkoma and Greenpoint, or between Speonk and Montauk.

There also would be no service to Grand Central Terminal. The MTA is posting updates here.

Metro-North Railroad

After operating a reduced schedule Monday, Metro-North will operate a half-hourly service on the Harlem, Hudson and New Haven lines during the morning and evening peak times, the MTA said.

Access-A-Ride

The Access-A-Ride paratransit service will continue to operate a very limited service for essential trips only.

NEW JERSEY TRANSIT

After being shut down since Sunday evening, NJ Transit rail and bus services are running again on Tuesday. Buses will run on a regular weekday schedule, while rail service will return on a holiday schedule for most lines.

Trains on the Morristown, Gladstone and Montclair-Boonton lines with direct service to Penn Station New York will be diverted to Hoboken. Cross honoring in Hoboken will be in effect for PATH, NY Waterway Ferry and the 126 bus as part of the Portal Bridge construction.

The Pascack Valley Line and the Main-Bergen & Port Jervis Lines will run on a standard holiday schedule.

The Atlantic City Rail Line will run on a regular weekday schedule. Service remains suspended on the New Jersey Coast Line and the Raritan Valley Line.

Light rail service had resumed on some lines Monday, but will return to all lines Tuesday, with possible delays or cancellations depending on conditions.
