Hoboken mayor urges residents to pick up after their dogs – NBC New York

Hoboken Mayor Emily Jabbour is laying down the law when it comes to picking up after your dog.

The mayor offered a word of warning on social media in reaction to the amount of dog waste on the streets.

“After the snowstorm and the snow pile starts to disappear, we’re finding surprises, and they’re not welcome surprises,” Jabbour said.

Some dog owners in Hoboken agreed with Jabbour’s message.

“Especially during the snow, it was really brutal to look at,” dog owner Dan Walpole told News 4.

One homeowner had proof of the dog waste left in front of his house. Hoboken utilizes pet waste stations in an effort to help dog owners keep the streets clean.

According to the mayor, Hoboken has 80 stations with 500 trash cans available for the post-poop pickup.

“It’s unacceptable for people to leave it on the street,” one Hoboken resident told News 4.

In Hoboken, there’s a $2,000 fine for not picking up after your pet, but you need to be caught in the act to receive it.

“It’s hard to find these people in real time,” founder of the Hoboken Poop Patrol social media account said. “The only way is to shame them a little bit.”
