Hanukkah brings light to our mikdash me’at as we gather to celebrate the holiday – United Hebrew Congregation Terre Haute

Hanukkah reminds us of our longing for light, and the Torah portions traditionally read at this time of year reflect upon the building of the mikdash — a dwelling place for God on earth, literally, a “place for the holy,” which we often translate as “the Temple.”

Our synagogues are sometimes called a mikdash me’at, or a “miniature Temple.”

In addition to joining together for prayer services, we also come to the synagogue to honor each other and the special relationships we share as a Jewish community.

The synagogue is a place where we come together in a holy community. We set the time at synagogue apart from our time in other places. The timing is right for a Sisterhood Shabbat

Last month, I was privileged to be treated to a Shabbat lunch by members of the UHC Sisterhood, and we talked about creating a special Shabbat service to honor current and past members.

The sisterhood of a synagogue most often works behind the scenes, helping to create a welcoming environment, while remaining out of the spotlight.

I would love during one of my Spring visits to honor the UHC Sisterhood with a special Shabbat service. Please reach out to Norma if you’d like to help us prepare. I’ll share more information in our next Hadashot!

Meanwhile, may the joys of Hanukkah bring light to you, your family, and loved ones. I look forward to seeing you on the Shabbat of Hanukkah this year and celebrating together!

Rabbi Jennifer Lewis will serve UHC Terre Haute during the 2025-26 academic year.
