Zohran Mamdani is The Next Mayor of New York City

Zohran Mamdani is The Next Mayor of New York City

In a defining moment for the city, Zohran Mamdani has secured victory in the 2025 mayoral race in New York City. The 34-year-old Queens assemblyman defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo (who chose to run as an independent after losing the Democratic Primary to Mamdani in June) and Republican Curtis Sliwa with a message that galvanized young New Yorkers and small business owners, drawing record numbers of early voters.

Mamdani ran as the city’s candidate of change, promising to freeze rents on stabilized apartments, make city bus transit free, open municipally-owned grocery stores, and raise the minimum wage. By winning, he becomes not only the city’s first Muslim mayor, but also its youngest in more than a century.

But his victory is not without questions. Critics warn that his lack of executive experience, bold promises, and aggressive agenda may collide with the realities of governing a city challenged by crime, budget shortfalls, deep social fractures, and plenty of establishment politicians and fundraisers locked into the gears of the machine. Still, as Mamdani declared, he intends to “Build a city that works for working people … for every New Yorker.”

In short, New York has voted for a pivot. The campaign’s era of protest-style platform has now entered City Hall’s front corridors. Whether this moment becomes historic or just hopeful remains to be seen—but for now, Zohran Mamdani has done what seemed impossible just a year ago. And come January 1, he’ll be the next mayor of New York City.
