Magnolia has released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming action comedyThelma, which is one of this year’s must-watch indie gems. This was such a fun movie, and I hope that people actually get to theaters to watch it!
I got to watch the film at Sundance earlier this year, and it was my favorite movie at the film festival. The story introduces us to an unlikely action hero, an elderly woman named Thelma Post, wonderfully played by June Squibb.
While major Hollywood studios continue to crap out remakes and sequels, we’ve got little indie films like this that tell fun and great stories.
In the film, “Thelma Post is a feisty 93-year-old grandmother who gets conned by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson and sets out on a treacherous quest across Los Angeles, accompanied by an aging friend and his motorized scooter, to reclaim what was taken from her.”
This is Squibb’s first leading film role of her 70-year career. In it, She “portrays the strong-willed Thelma with grit and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business – despite what her daughter Gail, son-in-law Alan, or grandson Danny might believe.”
The marketing for the film also wants audiences to know that Squibb actually did her own stunts for the film.
The film was written and directed by Josh Margolin, and it also stars Parker Posey as Thelma’s daughter, Clark Gregg as her son-in-law, and Fred Hechinger as her grandson.
Thelma is inspired by the director’s own grandmother who was almost the victim of a phone scam similar to what the film deals with. So, the film is what he imagined his grandma would do if she was actually scammed.
Thelma will be released in theaters June 21. You can read my review of the film here.
