IMPOSSIBLE Director Christopher McQuarrie After Learning of Plans To Kill Off His Character — GeekTyrant

Jeremy Renner has been talking about his time in the Mission: Impossible franchise, denying that he was going to take over from Tom Cruise, and he recently also shared why he really refused to return for Mission: Impossible: Fallout.

It turns out that Renner was asked to return for Mission: Impossible – Fallout… so that director Christopher McQuarrie could kill off Renner’s character Brandt, and as you might imagine Renner was not happy about that.

Renner shared the following in a recent interview with Happy Sad Confused Podcast: “I remember they tried to bring me over for a week so they could kill my character, and I was like, ‘No, you don’t get to do that. You’re not going to drag me over there and just kill my character,’ like get out of here!”

The actor went on to say: “If you’re going to do this and you’re going to use my character, you’re going to do it right.”

Renner said he even yelled at McQuarrie over it saying: “I yelled at [director Christopher McQuarrie]. Dude, you’re not going to do this to me like that; you’re not going to do me wrong.”

It was eventually revealed that Brandt had retired from fieldwork, and heading into the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning sequel, it’s unlikely that Renner will reprise the role there.

I mean, McQuarrie wanted to kill off Brandt because they didn’t want to deal with the character anymore. In the end, they are still going to do Renner wrong.

Renner also denied in the interview the rumor that he was being lined up to take over the franchise from Ethan Hunt actor Tom Cruise. But, before McQuarrie was brought in to work on the script for Ghost Protocol, that’s what it was looking like.

Regardless of the actor clashing with the director over plans to kill off his character, Renner is open to returning for another Mission: Impossible movie.

“He said: I was supposed to do more with them. I love those guys. I love Tom so much. We had so much fun, and I love that character a lot. It requires a lot of time away. It’s all in London. I had to go be a dad. It just wasn’t gonna work out then.”

“Maybe now that my daughter is older that could happen. I’d always jump into a ‘Mission: Impossible’ anytime and back into Brandt. It’s great.”

We’ll just have to wait and see if anything will ever happen with Brandt.
