There’s been a good amount of talk in recent months about Stephen Sommers’ classic 1999 supernatural adventure film The Mummy because the film is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Well, an interesting report has surfaced from Daniel Richtman claiming that Universal Pictures is developing a prequel film, and that Wes Tooke (Midway, The Rescue) is attached to write the script.
There’s really nothing more to report, but it’s enough to get fans excited about what this could end up being, if the rumor is true.
Original franchise star Brendan Fraser has talked a lot about returning to the franchise for a fourth Mummy film, and that it’s something he would be open to doing. But, if we are getting a prequel film, don’t expect to see Fraser in it.
I imagine that if a prequel film does get made, it will mostly likely focus on the early life of Imhotep. That would be an interesting story to tell and it would make sense to tell that story.
We’ll have to wait see if anything comes of this. In the meantime, The Mummy returns to theaters for its 25th anniversary on July 5.
What would you like to see in a prequel to The Mummy?
